Background of the study:

Traditional birth attendants (TBAs) play a long-standing role in maternal healthcare, especially in areas where access to formal medical services is limited. In Warri South, TBAs are often the primary caregivers during childbirth, owing to cultural trust and accessibility (Eboh, 2023). Their practices, though steeped in tradition, sometimes lack the rigorous medical protocols required for safe deliveries, contributing to increased maternal and neonatal risks (Okoro, 2024). The interplay between traditional and modern healthcare approaches in maternal care presents both challenges and opportunities. While TBAs provide essential services in remote areas, their limited training can lead to complications during labor and delivery. This study examines the contributions and challenges associated with TBAs in maternal healthcare, aiming to understand their role, the quality of care provided, and how their integration with formal health systems might be improved (Igho, 2025). By gathering qualitative data from community members, TBAs, and healthcare professionals, the research seeks to formulate strategies that leverage the strengths of TBAs while mitigating associated risks.

Statement of the problem:

In Warri South, the prevalent use of traditional birth attendants poses challenges to maternal healthcare due to inconsistent adherence to modern medical standards. This reliance contributes to higher maternal and neonatal complications, necessitating an investigation into the practices and integration of TBAs within formal healthcare frameworks (Uko, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

1. To assess the role of traditional birth attendants in maternal healthcare.

2. To identify the strengths and weaknesses of TBA practices.

3. To recommend strategies for integrating TBAs with formal healthcare systems.

Research questions:

1. What is the role of TBAs in maternal healthcare in Warri South?

2. What are the benefits and risks associated with TBA-led deliveries?

3. How can TBAs be effectively integrated into formal healthcare?

Research Hypotheses:

1. TBAs significantly influence maternal healthcare outcomes.

2. There is a correlation between TBA practices and increased maternal complications.

3. Integration of TBAs with formal healthcare improves maternal health outcomes.

Significance of the study:

This study elucidates the critical role of TBAs in maternal care, providing insights for policymakers to develop training and integration programs that enhance maternal and neonatal health in Warri South (Afolabi, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:

This study is limited to investigating the role of traditional birth attendants in maternal healthcare in Warri South Local Government Area, focusing solely on local TBA practices and maternal outcomes.

Definitions of terms:

1. Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs): Individuals who assist women during childbirth based on traditional practices.

2. Maternal Healthcare: Services provided to women during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum.

3. Integration: The process of combining traditional practices with modern medical protocols.
